As a parent, you have likely been bombarded with plenty of parenting advice (some unsolicited!), parenting tips and parenting services.You are trying to do the best job possible, yet you wonder which parenting tips and parenting services to follow, and which to avoid. Although there are no set rules when it comes to parenting issues, and certainly no parenting manual we can follow, there are some basic parenting philosophies which we can all take into consideration when weaving our way through our job as parents.

 

• Trust your instincts. You can read all the best parenting tips and buy all the parenting products and books on the market, yet none take the place of your instinct as a parent. Let your instincts and common sense guide you through your parenting journey.

 

• Cherish your marriage. If you find yourself letting everything else in your life come before your marriage, then you need to begin taking the time to nourish your marriage and make it a priority in your life. Your children will benefit from your strong marriage, and your strong marriage will provide a secure, loving family in which to raise your children.

 

• Teach your children independence. As much as we want to nourish, protect and care for our children, doing everything for them and making all of their decisions does nothing to prepare them for the world. Being there to guide them and encourage them to make the right choices will allow your children to become capable, independent-thinking adults.

 

• Give your children respect, and expect the same in return. We often expect respect out of our children, yet we do not offer respect in return. Remember: our children learn by our example, and there is no better example to set for your children than to show them respect.

 

• Pick your fights wisely. Establish a set of core values and expectations from your children and expect them to be followed. Otherwise, pick your fights carefully. Disagreeing with your children and disciplining them all day long will not accomplish more than a frustrated parent and a defeated child.

 

• Cherish your time with your children. As any parent of an older child will attest to, our children grow up quickly, so cherish your time with your children as they grow.
